Masala Bhath

A popular rice dish in North Karnataka and Maharashtra. This is usually prepared on festivals and occasions using a unique masala powder and vegetables.

Required Time: 25 Minutes
Serves: 4


2 Cups Rice
1 Cup Cauliflower Florets or Tondekayi/Tindli/Ivy Gourd, Chopped finely
1 medium sized Potato, Peeled and Chopped finely
1tbsp Masal Pudi/Godha Masala
1tsp Red Chili Powder
2tbsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
1tsp Jeera/Cumin Seeds
A pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
Few Curry Leaves
½ Cup fresh grated Coconut (Optional)
2tbsp Coriander leaves, Chopped finely
Salt to taste


Heat Oil and add Mustard Seeds and when they splutter add Jeera, Curry leaves, Asafoetida and the vegetables and stir-fry for a minute. Add Rice, Salt, Coconut, Masala Pudi and 4 Cups of water. Cover and cook until done. Remove to a serving dish and garnish with Coriander leaves and serve with Raitha.
