How To Remove Scratches From A CD

You have inserted a CD in the DVD player and are enjoying your favorite movie with your buddies. Suddenly, the CD starts stuttering and skipping or simply stops dead. Left with no choice, you move towards the DVD player and check out the CD only to find a good number of scratches resting there comfortably. This further increases your fear of disposing off your favorite CD as there are no hopes of repairing it or even writing it into a new CD. You have tried to clean it with soft cloth with hopes of removing at least some scratches but to no avail. Luckily, there are methods that can help you repair your CD and run it afresh. Here’s presenting you simple techniques to get rid of the bunch of scratches that your CD is injured with. Take a look!

Removing CD Scratches

Toothpaste Method

Supplies Required
  • Toothpaste
  • Peanut Butter
  • Baking Soda
  • Diet Cola or Soda Water
  • A small Container (to fit the CD and some liquid)
  • Cover for the container
  • Paper Towels
Procedure
  • Place the CD on a flat surface such that the backside is facing upwards.
  • Squeeze some toothpaste on a paper towel and spread it on the CD. Make sure that no clumps have been created.
  • Next, take some peanut butter on another paper towel and apply it on the toothpaste covered CD.
  • Now that you have applied toothpaste and peanut butter on the CD, take a new paper towel and buff the scratches from the CD. Since this is just the beginning of the fixing procedure, you need not worry about the cleanliness of the CD. You can leave the leftover peanut butter and toothpaste marks intact.
  • Apply another coat of toothpaste and peanut butter as you did before. But do not buff off the scratches this time.
  • Place the CD in the container and pour some diet cola or soda water such that the CD is completely immersed in it.
  • Next, put some soda baking on top of the liquid. Place the lid and secure tightly.
  • Shake the container lightly to mix the baking soda and liquid well. Leave the container aside for few minutes.
  • Open the container and remove the CD. Clean the CD with a paper towel and polish it nicely.
  • You may find cleaning the CD this time to be a little more difficult than cleaning it before since the toothpaste and peanut butter have got wet now. Nevertheless, take your time and clean the CD thoroughly to use it again.
Brasso Method

Supplies Required
  • Brasso Metal Polish
  • Liquid Soap
  • Soft Cloth
  • Water
Procedure
  • Clean your CD using liquid soap and water.
  • Leave the CD aside to air dry. Do not use any cloth or paper towel to wipe the CD dry.
  • Drop 2-3 drops of brasso metal polish (any brand would do) on the CD.
  • Polish the CD with a soft cloth radially for about 5 minutes and set aside for drying.
  • Take a fresh soft cloth and remove the polish from the CD in circular motions.
  • Rinse the CD well and dry completely.
  • Play the CD and check its working. In case the CD is still not working properly, repeat the process again.
Your CD is now free of scratches and ready to use again. Even though you now know how to remove scratches from a CD, it is best to take suitable preventions by storing your CDs appropriately.
