Akkithari Uppittu

Akkithari UppittuA dish prepared using broken Rice

Time Required: 25 Minutes
Serves: 4


4 Cups Akkithari/Broken Rice
4 – 5 Green Chilies, Chopped finely
½ Cup Avarekayi/Flat beans, Boiled (Optional)
10 Curry leaves, Chopped
Juice of 1 Lemon
2tbsp Oil
1tsp Bengal Gram Dal
1tsp Urad Dal/Black Gram split
1tsp Mustard Seeds
½ Cup fresh Coconut, Grated
Salt to taste


Roast Akkithari for 2 minutes, remove and keep it aside. Boil 9 Cups of water.

Heat Oil in a kadai/pan and add Bengal Gram Dal, Urad Dal and when they turn pink, add Mustard Seeds. When the Mustard seeds splutter add Curry leaves and Green Chilies. To this add Akkithari/Broken Rice and mix well. Add Salt and Lemon juice and boiling water and close the kadai with a lid. After 2 minutes, remove the lid and add Coconut and mix well. Remove to a serving bowl and serve hot with a piping cup of filter coffee.
